Cap Spartel lighthouse above the cliffs and the ocean

Viewpoint

Cap Spartel

At the north-western tip of Africa, Cap Spartel looks out over the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. It is a wild, windy and beautiful place for sunset.

Why visit

Cap Spartel is the headland that marks the north-western corner of Africa, at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Its white lighthouse, built in the 1860s, stands above cliffs and pine woods with sweeping views over the ocean.

Getting there

The cape is about 14 kilometres west of the city centre. The road winds through wooded hills above the coast. Take a taxi and agree the fare, including waiting time, or join a city tour that combines the cape with the Caves of Hercules.

Tips

  • It can be very windy. Bring a layer, even in summer.
  • Combine your visit with the Caves of Hercules, a few minutes down the coast.
  • Stay for sunset over the Atlantic.
  • Camel rides are often offered along the coast road. Agree the price before you get on.
