Practical tips
Tangier is generally a safe city for visitors, and much more relaxed than its old reputation suggests. Most problems are minor annoyances rather than real dangers, and a little preparation goes a long way.
The most common nuisance is people offering to guide you, especially around the port and the medina gates. Some are simply looking for a tip; others steer you to shops that pay them commission.
Petit taxis are cheap and convenient for trips within the city. Ask the driver to use the meter, or agree the fare before you set off. For longer trips, such as Cap Spartel, agree the price including any waiting time.

Modest clothing, covering shoulders and knees, is appreciated in the medina and helps you blend in. Ask before photographing people, and be respectful around mosques and during prayer times.
The main squares, the seafront and the new town are busy in the evening. In the medina, stick to the main lanes after dark, and take a taxi back to your hotel if you are unsure of the way.
Many people travel to Tangier alone without problems. Unwanted attention can happen; ignoring it and walking on confidently is usually the best response. Staying in a well-reviewed riad or hotel, where staff can give advice, helps.
In Morocco, dial 19 for the police and 15 for an ambulance or the fire service. Save your accommodation’s phone number before you go out.
